The first step is to develop a business plan (download business plan template), incorporating a business model and financial plan, which we will assist you with. If there is indeed commercial potential, we would assist you in acquiring funding to start up the business.
Where a spin-off company is formed, the shareholding in the company will initially be shared between UKZN and the inventors in accordance with the IP policy. Initially, UKZN will take a minimum of 26% shares in the spin-off company in lieu of IP licensed or goodwill (such as the university brand) contributed. On investment in the company by a third party, the shareholding of the initial shareholders may be diluted.
